- to complete the Health Sciences First Year programme at the University of Otago OR the first year of either the Bachelor of Health Sciences or Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science at the University of Auckland

- to complete 2 years' general medical training
- to complete 4 years' advanced medical training
- to pass exams to become a Fellow of the The Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (AFRM)
- an Annual Practising Certificate
- to pass a police check
