When we say ‘we’ or ‘us’, we mean the Tertiary Education Commission Te Amorangi Mātauranga Matua (TEC).
We are the New Zealand Government agency that owns and runs tahatu.govt.nz. Find out more about us and what we do to protect the information we collect.

When you use Tahatū we collect personal information and statistical information.

Personal information is any information that tells us something about you as an individual person or information that identifies you as an individual person.
Why we collect personal information and how we use it
We collect information so we can:
- check if you’re at least 13 years old or have permission from your guardian to use Tahatū
- make sure we only contact you if you want us to
- respond to any questions or correspondence from you
- improve this website and any related services
- carry out internal research and development
- provide you with information about a service you are using (including critical updates and announcements)
- analyse website usage, trends and statistics
- enforce our rights under Tahatū's terms and conditions of use
- carry out any other use authorised by you, or told to you at the time of collection.
When we collect personal information
We collect information when you:
- create your Tahatū account
- fill out forms for surveys or give us feedback
- get in touch with us.
What kind of personal information we collect
We may collect the following personal information about you:
- your name
- email address
- age in years
- gender
- ethnic group
- life stage (like school student, in work)
- region you usually live in
- if and why you would like to hear from us.
You can choose how much of this information to provide when you use Tahatū.
You need to share your name and email address to create an account on Tahatū.
How we collect personal information
We collect personal information by asking you for it directly, for example, by asking for your name and email address when you create an account.
We don't collect personal information about you from third parties (people who aren't you).
If you delete your Tahatū account, it may take some time for TEC to delete your information.
How we share your personal information
We only share your information with third parties if you give us permission to, or if another exception in the Privacy Act 2020 applies.
Exceptions include when:
- we can share the information without identifying you, for example, we record your answer to a survey question about what you like about Tahatū and share it alongside the answers of other Tahatū users
- we have to share the information to protect you or someone else from harm
- we are required by law to share the information.
How we look after your personal information
We may use cloud computing to manage and store information. We operate our cloud computing according to New Zealand Government standards. We take all reasonable precautions to protect personal information we hold from misuse, loss, unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. We do this by:
- strong security of external and internal premises
- storing information in access-controlled systems and limiting staff interaction with data
- providing training on the Privacy Act to our staff.
How to access your personal information
If you create an account you can access and change your personal information at any time by editing your profile.
For any other personal information you have the right to ask us:
- to give you any information we hold about you
- to correct any information we hold about you.

Statistical information is information about how you use Tahatū.
Why we collect statistical information
We collect this information so we:
- know which content and tools you use the most
- can improve your experience of Tahatū
- can protect Tahatū against bots and spam.
What kind of statistical information we collect
We collect information about:
- the pages you visit on Tahatū
- the links you click
- the channel you came to Tahatū from.
When we collect statistical information
We collect this information each time you visit tahatu.govt.nz.
How we collect statistical information
We collect this information using technology like cookies, Google Analytics, reCAPTCHA, and Hotjar.
You can choose to not use cookies by changing the settings on your browser, but this can affect how well some Tahatū features work. You can choose not to accept cookies when you first visit Tahatū.
