- Treat chronic diseases or disorders.
- Prescribe medications.

- Process health care paperwork.
- Develop medical treatment plans.
- Prepare reports summarising patient diagnostic or care activities.
- Inform medical professionals regarding patient conditions and care.
- Refer patients to other health care practitioners or health resources.
You need more than one qualification to become a consultant physician.
You need
- to complete the Health Sciences First Year programme at the University of Otago OR the first year of either the Bachelor of Health Sciences or Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science at the University of Auckland
- a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery
- 6 years of internal physician training
- to be a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in internal medicine
- an Annual Practising Certificate
- to pass a police check
