Employability skills are your abilities, qualities and attitudes that are valued by employers. They are transferrable skills you develop through work experience, study or daily life.

Developing your skillsTe whakawhanake i ō pūkenga,
You gain skills throughout your life. Some skills might relate to different jobs and careers, and you’ll be able to transfer them into a workplace.
You can gain and develop skills by:
- getting work experience, including volunteering
- travelling
- studying
- taking part in hobbies with other people, like playing a team sport
- taking part in community activities, like helping to organise events or fundraising.

There are 7 key skills that employers value and may look for when they’re hiring new employees. These are called employability skills. Having these skills could help you to stand out from other applicants and get the job you want.
Positive attitude
I’m positive, optimistic, respectful, friendly and motivated to work hard.
Communication
I listen, ask questions and share ideas. I understand that people communicate in different ways and that the way I communicate affects others.
Teamwork
I work well with people from different backgrounds to complete tasks and meet goals. I contribute to developing new ideas.
Self-management
I’m committed, responsible and dependable. I’m on time and prepared for the tasks I have to do.
Willingness to learn
I’m curious and open to learning new tasks, skills and information. I accept advice and learn from feedback.
Resilience
I’m adaptable in new, changing or challenging situations. I handle setbacks and try to find ways to keep going. I get help when needed and learn from my mistakes.
Thinking skills (problem solving and decision making)
I weigh up options, including consequences, before making decisions. I recognise problems and use initiative to figure things out. I will get advice and help when I need it.
