You usually need experience and training to become a driller and a qualification may be useful.

- a driver licence

- a New Zealand Certificate in Drilling (Levels 3, 4 and 5)
- a Class 2 driver licence or higher with a special-type vehicle endorsement
- to pass a police check and medical assessment
- a First Aid Certificate
- to be a member of the New Zealand Drillers Federation (NZDF)
- to pass a drug test
