Getting the most out of the Interest quiz, Kia tino whaihua ki a koe te kairoro Kaingākau
Updated 12 May 2026
Here are some tips for using the Interest quiz when you’re working with people to support their career planning and development.
Having an account is bestMēnā he pūkete tāu, ko te painga rawa atu tēnā,
The Interest quiz works best when people create an account and sign in. Here's why:
- Personalised results. Once their quiz results are saved, every career they view on Tahatū will show how well it matches their interests. This makes exploring options faster and more relevant.
- Save to My kete. People can save their quiz results and favourite career ideas, qualifications and guides to My kete. Selecting the heart icon on a card or page saves it to My kete.
- Continue across sessions. If you're working with people over multiple sessions, they can see their saved items in My kete and pick up where they left off.
Encourage people to create an account before starting the Interest quiz so their results are saved. This gives them something to come back to, even if they're not ready to decide today.

Options if unhappy with the resultsNgā kōwhiringa ki te matapōuri koe ki ngā otinga,
If someone is unhappy with their Interest quiz results, explain that the quiz is based on broad interest and personality types rather than matching people directly to specific jobs. The suggested roles won’t always line up with what they expect.
If they would rather explore careers by looking directly at job options, they may find the Explore career ideas section more helpful.

You can also work through the Compare your career ideas worksheet and instead of using jobs from the Interest quiz, they can use the jobs they're interested in. The How to find your career path guide page has a link to all the worksheets.
Work areas and career ideasNgā rāngai mahi me ngā whakaaro aramahi,
On the Interest quiz results page you'll see suggested work areas. These are broad categories that match people’s interests, like:
- health
- environment and animals
- building and construction
- education and social services
- creative arts and design.
Click the arrow on any work area to expand it and see specific career ideas. Each career idea has a full job profile with information on pay, tasks and how to get into the role.
Encourage people to explore several work areas, not just the top matches. Sometimes the best fit is something they hadn't considered.
Comparing jobs to interestsTe whakataurite mahi ki ngā kaingākau,
Once someone has completed the quiz, they can compare their results with any career idea on Tahatū.
When signed into your account, you can go to any career idea page and look for the What interests fit this job? section. This shows how well someone’s quiz results match that role.
This helps people see whether a career idea aligns with what they enjoy.
