Pacific peoples bring rich cultural identities, diversity, collective strengths, wellbeing and strong community connections to their career journeys. Pacific-centred career development works best when it reflects Pacific worldviews, values and culturally affirming ways of learning.

Understanding what influences Pacific peoples will help create career pathways and opportunities that feel meaningful and culturally aligned.

For example, Pacific students often make decisions with and for their ‘aiga (family) and wider community. Important influences include:

• Collective identity – success is shared, not individual
• Cultural values – respect, service, reciprocity, spirituality
• Holistic wellbeing – physical, mental, spiritual and social needs
• Community networks – church, village, elders, mentors
• Migration and opportunity – supporting family here and overseas

By integrating Pacific-centred career models, relational approaches and strengths-based practice Pacific students will be able to navigate their career pathways with confidence, purpose, and strong ‘aiga and community connections.
