- to do an apprenticeship and get a New Zealand Certificate in Forest Harvesting Operations (Level 3 or 4)
- a New Zealand Certificate in Log Stock Management (Level 3) (Log Marshalling and Log Scaling strands)
- a relevant tertiary qualification
- a driver licence
