You need more than one qualification to become an obstetrician or a gynaecologist.
You need
- to complete the Health Sciences First Year programme at Otago University OR the first year of either the Bachelor of Health Sciences or Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science at Auckland University
- a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery
- at least 2 years of general hospital experience after graduation
- at least 6 years of advanced specialist training and examinations to become a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
- an Annual Practising Certificate
- to pass a police check

- a Postgraduate Diploma in Obstetrics and Medical Gynaecology
- a Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences
- a Postgraduate Certificate in Women’s Health
