About Path Finder, Mō te Tiro Whetū

Path Finder is a tool that shows you the steps you could take to get into a career.

It’s based on real student and workforce data so you can see what path others have taken to get into a job.

Path Finder:

• matches career ideas to study, training and school subject options – you can see the link between your choices and getting into a certain career
• shows different ways to get into a career so you can compare options and make informed decisions
• shows next steps so you can make a career plan that’s right for you.

Path Finder:

• shows in-school and out-of-school entry options for a career idea
• offers subject guidance based on past students
• includes vocational, work-based and no-study pathway options
• allows pathways to be saved, shared and revisited via My kete.

Path Finder gives you options to choose from so you can find a path that works for you.

1. Start with a career idea – there are more than 800 to explore.
2. Find out what study or training you could do – it shows the most common study or training people have taken and other options.
3. Discover entry options to get into study or training if you’re in school or out of school. If you’re in school, see what school subjects others have taken to get into that career.
4. Get a career path summary that shows all the steps to get into a career idea – this can be saved and shared.

You can use path summaries to compare different ways to get into a job or compare what’s needed to get into different jobs.

Path summaries also have links to information on Tahatū so you can find out more about the career idea and study or training options.

You should check entry requirements with study and training providers as you may need to pass certain school subjects to do a course.

Path Finder shows study and training options in groups:

• most common – study or training more commonly taken in get into a career
• other options – other ways that can still lead to the same career idea.

Path Finder may show many to no options to choose to get into a career idea. If there are no options there may still be ways to get into it – Path Finder may just have limited data on that career.

The study and training options shown are based on pathway popularity, not suitability or recommendation.

Path Finder uses a combination of learner achievement records and data from Stats NZ’s population Census, Stats NZ’s Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI) and Inland Revenue.

All data from these sources is anonymous. Our algorithms work out the strongest connections between career ideas, qualifications and school subjects. Algorithms and data have been independently reviewed for accuracy.

When we review results we may improve them through research and curation.
