Guided by the wisdom of skilled ancestors and the courage of families who sought new opportunities, Career Malaga encourages Pacific youth to embrace and celebrate their heritage and pursue education with boldness and pride.

Parents and educators are encouraged to share cultural values and support young people in:

    • exploring career ideas
    • identifying personal anchors through activities like My shield
    • fostering lifelong learning.

Career Malaga uses Tahatū Career Navigator as a source to explore career ideas, learn more about school subjects, tertiary study and training and how to set goals and take actions.

The resource includes an educators’ guide and a student workbook to facilitate learning and discussion.

    How to use Career Malaga
Me pēhea te whakamahi i te Malaga Aramahi,

Students are encouraged to think about who they are, for example their:

    • cultural identity
    • special interests
    • strengths.

They’re encouraged to think about how these things can lead to exciting and fulfilling futures.

Career Malaga is available as a digital educators’ guide and a student workbook in English. The Career Malaga student workbook is also available in Samoan and Tongan.

    The booklets can be used:

    • by students on their own to start a collection of career ideas, reflections and insights
    • at school during career evenings for parents
    • as a culture-specific component in school career planning workshops
    • as a follow-up or home-based resource to engage students and their parents in career conversations – issued at the end of a school career planning workshop
    • at career planning or information sessions run by community youth, support or church organisations
    • by selecting individual pages to suit a tailored career workshop.

Students may find it useful to discuss their results with others if they feel comfortable doing so. This could be with a friend, trusted teacher, youth leader, career adviser or parent or other family member.

The planning section of the workbook is a good place for students to record progress against their goals. This section can also be used for ongoing reflection, or to receive affirmation from parents and career advisers about their progress toward their dreams and goals.
