You usually need to do training to become a dredge operator and a qualification may be useful.
You need
- a Class 2, 3, 4 or 5 driver licence
- a Wheels, Track and Rollers Course (WTR) endorsement
You may need
- to join a professional organisation if working at sea
- to meet sea service, medical fitness, eyesight, and fit and proper person requirements
- to complete training courses and get the required ancillary certificates
- to complete a training course and get a New Zealand Certificate in Domestic Maritime Operations (CIDMO) (Restricted Limits) (Level 4)
- to pass an oral examination and get a Skipper Restricted Limits (SRL) certificate of competency from Maritime New Zealand

You usually don't need specific NCEA levels for this job, but Level 2 may be useful.
